Minnesota is home to four genera of carnivorous plants, mostly found in bogs, fens, and wetland areas throughout the state:
🪺 Pitcher Plants (Sarracenia purpurea) — The classic purple pitcher plant traps insects in its water-filled leaves. Found across northern MN bogs.
☀️ Sundews (Drosera spp.) — Dewy, sticky tentacles that curl around prey. Several species including round-leaved and linear-leaved sundews.
🫧 Bladderworts (Utricularia spp.) — Aquatic and terrestrial species with tiny suction traps. The fastest plant movement in the world.
🧈 Butterworts (Pinguicula vulgaris) — Greasy leaves that digest small insects. Found in northern MN fens and rocky shorelines.
